Building CommUNITY Thru Basketball

UNITY Hoops was sparked by the recognition that youth in emerging communities needed safe space to play and come together to build community. This need was evident prior to COVID and has become more acute throughout the pandemic.
A group of community builders has come together who share a love of basketball and a belief that community comes from shared space, shared passion and shared purpose. Within this shared space we can engage and understand that we are more similar than we are different and through this build UNITY.

UNITY Hoops will focus on six communities in the city:
-
 Ledbury/Herongate/Ridgemont (Taggart Parkes BGCO),
-
 Vanier (Don McGahan BGCO)
-
 Caldwell Heights/Carlington (Bellevue Community Centre)
-
 Richie/Ramsey (Ron Kolbuz BGCO),
-
 Overbrook (Overbrook Community Centre),
-
 Michele/Penny (Michele Heights Community Centre)

UNITY Hoops will conduct free basketball clinics for boys and girls ages 7-16. Organized and run by some of Canada’s top coaches and programs, the goal will be to introduce each attendee to the sport of basketball and ensure they have fun! Each participant will not only leave with great memories and make new friends but will also be given a basketball, t-shirt and other Unity Hoops swag. We will host workshops, BBQs, feature DJs and incorporate urban art and culture into the day.
